IRVINE, Calif. - Junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen recorded 11 saves in the cage - five in the fourth quarter - to lead the No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 5 California, 9-4, Saturday morning in a semifinal match of the UC Irvine Invitational. With the win, UCLA advances to the championship match and will face No. 2 Stanford at 5:15 p.m. Sunday.
Seniors Courtney Mathewson and Brittany Rowe and junior Anne Belden each scored two goals to lead UCLA (16-0). The Bruins also received goals from seniors Tanya Gandy and Jillian Kraus and junior Tanya Gandy.
California's Molly Hayes led the Golden Bears with three goals.
UCLA led the entire contest, racing to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Mathewson opened the scoring with 4:04 left in the first period and Domanic followed with UCLA's second goal at 2:14. With 15 seconds to go in the first quarter, Mathewson added her second goal of the morning to secure a 3-0 lead for the Bruins.
California (8-4) closed the gap to one goal, 5-4, by the third quarter. The Golden Bears outscored UCLA by a 3-2 margin in the second frame and blanked the Bruins, 1-0, in the third period.
Belden helped UCLA cushion its slim lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Newport Beach, Calif., resident scored her first goal of the day with 6:43 remaining in the contest and added another goal with 3:16 to play, handing UCLA a 7-4 lead.
With 1:55 left in the contest, Rowe scored her second goal of the match, and Kraus found the back of the cage with 67 seconds to play, cementing the Bruins' victory.
