The UCLA men's volleyball team, ranked eighth in the AVCA coaches poll, hosts ninth-ranked Hawai'i this week to continue its six-match, three-week conference home stand.
UCLA and Hawai'i will meet on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2. Both matches will be broadcast live (audio) over the internet at www.uclabruins.com. Hawai'i will also originate a broadcast back to the islands. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
Last week both teams dropped a pair of matches in their home arenas. The Bruins lost conference matches to Pepperdine (2-3) and USC (0-3). The Warriors (2-4, 2-2) lost non-conference matches to Loyola-Chicago (2-3) and Penn State (0-3) in their annual Outrigger Hotels Invitational.
Against Pepperdine, the Bruins held a 2-1 lead in games before the Waves stormed back to win the final two sets. Pep's Paul Carroll pounded 37 kills for a national high during the week. UCLA freshman Garrett Muagututia and sophomore Jamie Diefenbach each recorded career-highs of 22 kills. The Bruins controlled the net by out-blocking the Waves 14.0-11.5 and serving five aces to the Waves' two, but Pepperdine won the match on defense, out-digging the Bruins, 60-45.
Two nights later, the Bruins had no answers for a hot USC attack that committed just four errors in a three-game sweep and hit .533, out-blocking the Bruins, 15.5-2.0. Muagututia led the Bruins with 17 kills (.433) and red-shirt freshman Brett Perrine added 15.
The Rainbow Warriors, ranked third last week, fared no better. Loyola-Chicago (4-2) was ranked 13th last week and Penn State (2-2) was ninth. Against the Ramblers, the Warriors fought back from an 0-2 deficit only to fall 15-7 in the fifth game. In that final game, they hit .000 (5-5-19), while LUC hit .529 (10-1-17). The following night, Penn State recorded 10 more kills (58-48), three more aces (5-2) and three more blocks (7.5-4.5) in sweeping UH.
UCLA leads the overall series with UH, 46-18 after splitting four matches in the islands last season. The Bruins ended the Warriors season in 2006 with a 3-1 victory in the MPSF quarterfinals.
