May 15, 2000

LOS ANGELES - UCLA freshman shortstop Natasha Watley was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week today, as announced by Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen.

Watley, a freshman from Irvine, CA, hit .571 in the last week of the regular season, posting three RBI, three runs scored and one double as part of an 8-for-14 week at the plate. In addition, she posted a .643 slugging percentage and was perfect defensively on 21 chances. Watley had three stolen Bases on four attempts over the course of the week, improving her single-season total to 27 and establishing a new UCLA single-season recording the process. The previous record of 25 swipes in a season was set by current U.S. Olympian Christie Ambrosi, who posted that mark last season (1999).

UCLA, the defending NCAA Champions, opens NCAA Tournament play on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. against Canisius at Easton Softball Stadium on the UCLA campus. The Bruins are 39-11-1 on the 2000 season and are currently ranked third in the nation.
