The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team travels to the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown, hosted by UNLV at the Anthem Golf Course.
"We have never played the UNLV event, and we are excited to add it to our schedule," said UCLA Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "Anthem Country Club is one of the best in Las Vegas, and we look forward to playing there and competing in a tough field.
Joining the No.2 Bruins are three teams ranked in the nation's Top 15: No.4 Pepperdine, No.6 Arkansas and No.11 UNLV. Ten schools ranked in the nation's Top 30 are featured in the 16-team field. Anthem, which is hosting the event for the fourth straight year, measures 6,168 yards and carries a par of 72.
The Bruins placed second in their most recent tournament, the Stanford Invitational. Individually, sophomore Amie Cochran was UCLA highest finisher, capturing sixth place at 212 (-2).
UCLA's lineup for the Las Vegas event features one senior, one junior, one sophomore and two freshmen. Senior Susie Mathews enjoyed her best performance of the season, tying for 14th place at Stanford. Junior Hannah Jun recorded her second straight Top 25 finish, tying for 23rd with a final round 69 (-2). Freshman Jane Park placed ninth and first-year player Tiffany Joh, playing as an individual, tied for 10th place.
"Tiffany Joh is making her debut in the team lineup after returning from an injury," stated Forsyth. "Her Top 10 finish at Stanford as an individual was outstanding and we are looking forward to having her scores count for the team this week. She is an outstanding ball striker and a very natural talent."
In the most recent GolfWeek rankings Park was 6th, Jun 14th, Cochran 15th and Joh 21st. Park and Cochran are tied for the team lead in scoring average at 73.1, followed by Jun at 73.2. Joh boasts a 73.0 average, but has just four rounds of competition. Mathews is averaging 75.1.
"Hannah Jun has stepped into a leadership role for our team," said the head coach. "Her work ethic has always been very strong, and her Top 10 at Vanderbilt, followed by a 69 in the final round at Stanford, has secured her spot in the lineup for the remainder of the fall."
