LOS ANGELES UCLA senior men's tennis player Nick Meister underwent successful surgery on his right hip last week and will miss the entire 2011 season, head coach Billy Martin announced on Thursday. The team's No. 1 singles and doubles player a year ago, Meister plans to seek a medical hardship waiver from the Pac-10 after the spring season in hopes of gaining another year of eligibility in 2012.
"I'm extremely disappointed that Nick will not be able to play for us this year due to his injury," said Martin, who is in his 18th season as head coach at UCLA. "We are definitely going to miss his leadership both on and off the court. Nobody has worked harder than Nick and his work ethic has been a great example to our entire team. As a coach, I'm really hoping that someone can step up and fill that role for us this year."
Meister earned All-America honors in doubles last year with teammate Amit Inbar. He was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection, ending the season ranked No. 73 in singles and No. 10 in doubles (w/Inbar) in the Final ITA Rankings. He finished the season with a 24-12 overall singles record and a 27-9 mark in doubles play. Meister is also an outstanding student, earning second-team All-Pac-10 Academic honors in 2010.
