Bruins Defeat San Diego State 8-0, Second Game Called Off

Feb. 2, 2002

Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - UCLA continued its season-opening scoreless streak with a second consecutive run-rule win on Saturday afternoon, defeating San Diego State 8-0 at Easton Stadium. UCLA is now 2-0 on the season, and Amanda Freed is 1-0, earning her first pitching victory of the year in her first appearance. UCLA's second game of the day, a scheduled 3 pm start against Long Beach State, was cancelled.

Neither team had much offense through the first four innings. Each team got a hit in the first, with Janna Kovensky reaching safely for the Aztecs and Stacey Nuveman hitting a single to left field for the Bruins. Those remained the only hits of the game until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Bruins batted around.

Junior 2B Monique Mejia led off the inning, reaching on an error and became the first of eight Bruins to cross the plate in an inning that included seven hits, a triple by Freed, a double by Nuveman, a home run by Claire Sua, the first for a Bruin in 2002, and a game-ending single by SS Natasha Watley.

The Bruins were scheduled to play a second game on Saturday, against Long Beach State, but because all three previous games went longer than two hours, there was not enough daylight remaining for the Bruins and The Beach to play.

The day's first game at Easton Stadium, between Long Beach State and San Jose State ended with a 5-2 win for The Beach in a seven-inning game that lasted more than two and a half hours. Following the two-hour, five-inning Bruin win over San Diego State, the Aztecs squared off against The Beach for a two-hour, four-minute contest. San Diego State walked away with the 2-0 win just before 5 pm Pacific Time.

UCLA returns to action on Sunday, February 3, with a scheduled 1 pm first pitch against San Jose State.
