LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's water polo team has been ranked No. 3 in the national preseason poll, as announced by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) on Wednesday.
UCLA totaled 90 points in the preseason poll, trailing USC (99) and California (95).
Stanford will open the season ranked No. 4, followed by Pacific at No. 5.
Rounding out the preseason poll's top 10 teams includes UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and Long Beach State, respectively.
UCLA finished the 2010 season ranked No. 4, nationally, after finishing fourth at the MPSF Tournament. The Bruins posted a 19-6 overall record, tied for second place (at 6-2) in the MPSF standings with USC.
This fall, UCLA will return 15 letterwinners, including top scoring threats Josh Samuels, Griffin White, Cristiano Mirarchi and Cullen Hennessy. Other key returners for the Bruins include Brett Hays, Aimone Barabino, Chris Wendt and Bret Lathrope.
UCLA opens its schedule at home, hosting the UCLA Invitational, on Saturday, Sept. 3. The Bruins will play two regular-season games (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 8 a.m., La Verne at 6 p.m.) and two exhibition contests.
