Lauren Cheney Named NSCAA/adidas First-Team All-American

Dec. 8, 2009

LOS ANGELES - UCLA senior women's soccer standout Lauren Cheney made school history on Tuesday, becoming the first Bruin player to earn NSCAA/adidas All-America honors all four years of her college career. Cheney, who was named to the first-team, was joined on the 2009 NSCAA/adidas All-America Team by third-team selection Sydney Leroux.

Cheney, from Indianapolis, Ind., rewrote the UCLA career record books during her senior season in Westwood, breaking the school records for points (173) and game-winning goals (28). She also tied former Bruin Traci Arkenberg for the school record in goals with 71. Cheney also ranks second all-time at UCLA in career assists with 31. She ended the 2009 campaign ranked second on the team in scoring with 46 points (18g, 10a), while leading UCLA to the school's seventh straight appearance in the NCAA College Cup. In addition to this year, Cheney was a first-team selection in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Leroux, from Vancouver, British Columbia, led the team in scoring this past season with 48 points on a team-best 23 goals and two assists. Her 23 goals tied Cheney for the single-season school record. She also led the Bruins this year with seven game-winning goals. Leroux also set new UCLA single-season NCAA Tournament records for both points (16) and goals (8). She tied the school record for goals in a match, knocking in four in the Bruins' 7-1 first-round victory over Boise State.

Both Cheney and Leroux were recently named two of 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy.
