Bruins Invited to Team USA Baseball Trials

Oct. 21, 1997

Three UCLA Bruins have been invited to the Team USA Trials to be held from November 5-9 in Tucson, Arizona. Those three players are sophomore Rob Henkel and freshmen Chase Utley and Chad Cislak.

Henkel had an outstanding freshman campaign in 1997. He did not allow an earned run in nine and two thirds innings in postseason play. Over his last 11 appearances of the season, he posted a 1.06 ERA. He starred in league play where opponents batted just .177 against him.

Utley, a freshman out of Long Beach Polytechnic High School, was a second round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He batted .525 with 12 home runs last season.

Cislak, a freshman out of Sabino High School in Tucson, Arizona, was 14-0 last season. He pitched for the United States Junior National Team over the summer. He was both an All-American and an Academic-All-American last season.

The Bruins have had three players compete for Team USA over the past two years. Troy Glaus and Jim Parque competed in the Olympics, and Eric Valent played last summer in international competition.
