Bruins Battle Waves for MPSF Lead

Host USC in 21st annual Kilgour Cup, Feb. 4

Jan. 26, 1998

The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team, winners of its first five matches by sweep, travels this week for a first place showdown against MPSF Mountain Division foe Pepperdine.

First serve for the Jan. 29 match is set for 7 p.m.

The Bruins, 5-0 overall and 2-0 in MPSF action, defeated UC Santa Barbara 3-0 last Friday on the road. Sophomore All-American Adam Naeve spiked a season best 30 kills after switching from the middle to opposite in Game 2. Senior Tom Stillwell added 11 kills and three blocks and junior Danny Farmer came off the bench and contributed four kills and four blocks. Game scores were 15-13, 15-9, 15-10 in the Bruins' favor.

Last season, the Bruins and Waves split a pair of league matches, each team winning on its home court. The Waves last Feb.13 denied UCLA coach Al Scates his 900th victory with a three-game sweep at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Bruins returned the favor with a four-game victory at Pauley Pavilion April 4.

"Pepperdine will be our toughest match to date," said Scates. "They are returning several key starters, and have added some good players. Their crowd will be fired up."

Third ranked Pepperdine, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play, returns four starters, including opposite George Roumain who is averaging 7.3kpg.

On Feb. 4, UCLA will host USC in the 21st annual Kilgour Cup. USC's appearance in the Kilgour Cup, a one-match benefit honoring former Bruin All-American Kirk Kilgour, will be its first since 1987. The Bruins 17-2 in Kilgour Cup matches in which they have participated, are 6-0 against USC in this event. The Bruins have also won 11 consecutive matches against the Trojans dating to 1992.
