LOS ANGELES -- The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team, winners of its first four matches by sweep, travels this week for an early showdown against MPSF Mountain Division foe UC Santa Barbara.

First serve for the Jan. 23 match is set for 7:05 p.m.

Over the last two years, the Bruins and Gauchos have split six matches with UCSB winning three of four regular season conference matches. The Bruins last year defeated UCSB 3-0 in the MPSF semifinals and in 1996 advanced to the NCAA Championships with a 3-2 victory in the MPSF Championship match at Hawaii. Overall, the Bruins lead the series, 90-24.

The Bruins, 4-0 overall and 1-0 in MPSF action, defeated Loyola Marymount 3-0 on Jan. 15 at LMU's Gersten Pavilion. It was the Bruins' 54th straight victory over the Lions, 0-1. The Bruins survived nine aces by the Lions, but limited LMU to a .224 attack percentage with a 13.5-5.5 blocking advantage. Senior quick hitter Tom Stillwell led a balanced UCLA offense with 11 kills and five blocks.

On Jan. 17, the Bruins defeated the UCLA Alumni 3-1 in Pauley Pavilion. Led by former three-time All-American Paul Nihipali, the Alumni won Game 2 15-10, the first game the varsity has lost in 1998.
