Player Profile
Position:
Interior Defensive Line/PAT-FG Block

Alma Mater:
Fresno State '89

Jethro Franklin, who spent the last eight years coaching the defensive line at his alma mater of Fresno State, is in his first season as an assistant coach at UCLA. He is in charge of tutoring the Bruin interior defensive line.

Jethro is an outstanding young football coach," said Toledo at the time of the hiring. "He comes highly recommended by many people. (Running backs coach) Kelly Skipper coached and played with Jethro at Fresno State and is very familiar with his ability. I think he will do a great job working with our young players."

Franklin, 33, produced several All-League performers during his eight years coaching the Bulldog defensive line. In 1992, the defensive front played a key role in setting a new FSU season record for tackles for losses (67). He coached in three bowl games at Fresno State.

As a player, the new Bruin coach twice earned All-America honors (1986 and 1987) as a standout on the Fresno State defensive line. As a junior in 1986, he set a school record (since broken) with 19.5 sacks. As a senior in 1987, he was selected second-team All-American and Pacific Coast Athletic Association "Defensive Player of the Year" after leading the Bulldogs with 12 sacks. Four sacks came against Troy Aikman and the Bruins during a September game at the Rose Bowl. During his two-year Bulldog career, he made 31.5 sacks (second on FSU's career list) and was named the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior. He was selected to play in the East-West Shrine game and the Japan Bowl following his outstanding senior season.

Franklin was an 11th round draft choice by the Houston Oilers in 1988 and went on to spend the 1989 and '90 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He was the No. 1 draft choice of the San Antonio Rough Riders of the World League of American Football (WLAF) in the winter of 1991, but instead elected to begin his coaching career.

Franklin also owns some NFL coaching experience. He received the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Buffalo Bills in the summer of 1994. He interned with the Cleveland Browns in the summer of 1995.
