Stacy Winsberg, who served as strength and conditioning coach for the U.S. Women's National Softball Team at the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2000 Olympics, lost her battle with cancer on Dec. 12, 2001. Beginning with the 2002 edition, this tournament has been named in her honor. In addition, a yearly team award, previously named the Gutsy Bruin Award, was re-named the Stacy Winsberg Award.
A four-year letterwinner at UCLA, Winsberg was a member of three national championship teams (1982, 1984, 1985). She was also a two-time ASA All-American (1984, 1985) and competed internationally in the Tri-National Tournament (China) and Japan Cup in 1985.
In addition to her work with the U.S. National Team, Winsberg had owned Premier Sports Training and served as a conditioning consultant in Northern California. She was a licensed therapist and her clients included Olympic gold medalists, NCAA Division I athletic programs and ASA teams and athletes. In 1993, she was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Hall of Fame.
