Freshman forward Abu Danladi from the UCLA men’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 13-19.
Danladi, also the Pac-12 Player of he Week, was instrumental in the Bruins taking down No. 1-ranked Washington and No. 17-ranked Oregon State last weekend. Making his home debut on Thursday against the No. 1 Huskies, Danaldi got the start and played 60 minutes, constantly putting pressure on the Huskies’ backline. In the 15th minute, the reigning Gatorade High School Player of the Year boxed out defenders and played a perfect ball to Leo Stolz for the first goal of the game. On Sunday, Danladi netted two goals in just 39 minutes of game action. The first goal was spectacular as he corralled a long ball from Chase Gasper and poked it past the Beavers goalkeeper while simultaneously shielding off the defender. Once he had control in behind the keeper, Danladi put it into the empty net for his first of the game. He followed that up with a 39th minute goal, making a smart run down the middle of the field and securing a through ball from Stolz before tucking it into the bottom left corner for his second goal of the game. Being hampered by injury, Danladi has played just six games (four starts) for UCLA, racking up seven points; good for third on the team. His performance helped the Bruins move into a tie for first place in the Pac-12 standings with five games left to play.
This is Danladi’s first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
