LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Bruins rallied with four runs in the sixth inning after giving up the game's first run in the top half of the frame, as UCLA beat UAB 4-1 to force Sunday's if necessary game at Ulmer Stadium. That contest will start at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.
The Bruins (40-19) had eight hits, as junior Jessica Hall posted two. In the circle, she struck out seven in a complete-game effort to improve to 11-7 on the year. The junior gave up one run, four hits and four walks. Hall had 1-2-3 innings in the second, fifth and seventh and fanned a pair in the first and the fourth.
Hall got out of a huge jam in the top of the first. Caitlin Attfield singled to left-center to open the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball. After a walk to Heather Pearson, Hall struck out Whitney Fletcher, but when the low ball briefly got away from freshman Brittany Moeai, Pearson took second. However, Hall battled back with a strikeout of Kate Armstrong and retired Kristen McGrath on a comebacker to get out of it.
The junior hurler did it again in the third to keep UAB off the scoreboard. Amy Dennis led off with a double to left-center and a bunt single by Attfield put runners on the corners, as Attfield then stole second. But Hall retired Pearson on a fly out to shallow right, Fletcher on a strikeout and Armstrong on a comebacker to again get out of it.
The Bruins attempted to rally with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshmen Mysha Sataraka and Britney Rodriguez drew back-to-back, two-out walks and Hall roped a single to left. But UAB's Dennis had a perfect throw to the plate to retire Sataraka and keep the game scoreless.
UCLA had another chance in the fifth, but a great defensive play ended the inning. With two outs, freshman Allexis Bennett singled to center and stole second. Senior B.B. Bates then grounded one to short, but Attfield bobbled it, allowing Bennett to move to third and Bates to reach. After Bates stole second, sophomore Stephany LaRosa tapped one to the 5-6 hole, but Armstrong made a diving grab and threw out LaRosa from her knees to end the inning.
The Blazers scored the game's first run with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. With one out and Armstrong on first after a walk, McGrath grounded one up the middle, but LaRosa made a ranging stab at the ball and glove flipped it to sophomore Gracie Goulder at second for the force. A walk to Anna Kimbrell gave UAB a pair on base, and with Hailey Glynn running at second for McGrath, Chandler Orr blooped a single into left to bring Glynn in.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins rallied with four runs to take the lead. The inning started with a booming home run by sophomore Ally Carda to left, her 18th of the season, to equal the score at one. One out later, Rodriguez singled to left and was pinch-run for by sophomore Tara Mueller, who advanced to second on a single to left by Hall. Senior Devon Lindvall followed with a single up the middle, as Mueller scored to give the Bruins the lead, Hall took third and Lindvall advanced to second on the throw home. With sophomore Kaelin Sprawls in to run for Hall at third, Goulder laced one up the middle to plate Sprawls and Lindvall to put the Bruins up 4-1.
