UCLA Women Finish Third at Pac-12 Championship
The sixth-ranked UCLA Women's Golf Team finished third Wednesday at the Pac-12 Championship, improving upon their fourth-place finish from last year. The Bruins, in second place after two rounds at the Valencia Country Club, shot 297(+9) on the final day to finish at 879(+15) for the entire tourney, behind only USC and the University of Washington.
Erynne Lee, rediscovering her good form from day one, led the Bruins with a 69 (-3), finished seventh overall atop the individual board. Junior Ani Gulugian also put in a strong performance, carding a 72 (E) for the second consecutive round and finishing in a three-way tie for 11th. Gulugian, sitting at +3 with five holes to play, came through in the clutch for UCLA, making birdies on her next three holes to even out her scoresheet. Louise Ridderstrom shot a 77 (+5), finishing 33rd overall, and Lee Lopez carded a 78 (+6), finishing tied for 24th. Also finishing in the five-way tie for 24th was Tiffany Lua, as the senior finished her tournament with an 81 (+9).
Other teams could only watch as USC, up by nine strokes after 36 holes, shot a smooth 282(-6) to pace the field and seal the conference title. The Trojans finished at 853(-11) after 56 holes, 24 strokes ahead of second-place Washington. The Huskies came on strong for the final day, shooting 293(+5) to slide just ahead of UCLA at 877(+13). The Bruins held off Arizona, as the Wildcats finished at 882(+18) to tie with Stanford for 4th place.
The Bruins will take some time off before returning to action at the NCAA Regionals starting Thursday, May 9th.
In other news, four UCLA players were selected to the 2013 Pac-12 Women's Golf All-Conference Team. Senior Tiffany Lua and sophomore Erynne Lee were named to the first team. Senior Lee Lopez earned a spot on the second team and junior Ani Gulugian was an honorable mention selection.
