Complete UCLA MVB Release 4.23.13

This Week -- The fourth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team travels to Provo, UT for the MPSF semifinals against No. 1 BYU at 8 p.m. MT.

Live Coverage -- Fans can follow the match on UCLA's live Twitter feed @UCLAMensVB. The match will also be televised on BYU TV (check local cable system), and it will be carried on GameTracker.

In The Rankings -- The Bruins (21-10) are No. 4 in the AVCA national rankings this week after sweeping Pepperdine on Saturday night in the MPSF qaurterfinals at the John Wooden Center. BYU (23-4) advanced with a five-set victory at home over eighth-seeded Hawai'i.

Scouting the Opponent -- BYU rallied from a two sets to one deficit Saturday night against visiting Hawai'i to advance and host the semifinals. The Cougars enter Thursday night's match with a four-natch winning streak.

The Series --UCLA leads the all-time series with BYU, 37-24 and split the season series as each team won on its own court. BYU won 3-0 on Feb. 9 and the Bruins avenged that loss with a 3-0 victory on Apr. 6. The Bruins are the last team to beat the Cougars.

In the MPSF playoffs, the Bruins are 2-0 against the Cougars: winning 3-0 in the league championship match in 1995 and 3-0 in the semifinals in 2000. Overall, the Bruins are 22-13 in MPSF playoff matches. UCLA has won five MPSF Tournament titles (1995, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2006) and all of them have resulted in NCAA titles.

Recapping the Week -- Against Pepperdine on Apr. 20, the Bruins dominated, controlling the net by out-blocking the visitors, 9.0-6.5 and limiting them to an attack percentage of .143. UCLA hit .386 with 39 total kills to Pep's 32. UCLA also recorded 30 digs to Pep's 12 and out-served the Waves, 2-0.

Individually, junior Dane Worley recorded 13 kills (.409), followed by nine each from Robart Page, who hit .353 and Gonzalo Quiroga. Spencer Rowe led both teams with seven block assists.

John Speraw's First Season at UCLA -- John Speraw (UCLA '95) begins his first season as the head coach at his alma mater. In 10 seasons at UC Irvine, Speraw led the Anteaters to three NCAA championships, including the 2012 title, and a 199-106 (.646) overall record. Last summer, he also served as an assistant coach for the USA Men's National Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the London Olympics. Speraw earned AVCA National Coach of the Year in 2006 and was given the USA Olympic Committee's National Coach of the Year award in 2007. His current career record is 220-116 (.651). On Mar. 25, he was named head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team for the next quadrennial ending at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. He will continue in his role as the Bruins' head coach.

Coming Up -- Should UCLA win on Thursday, it would advance to the MPSF Championship match on Apr. 27 against the UC Irvine-Long Beach State winner. For the 14th time in school history, UCLA will host the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship. The 2013 championship is scheduled for May 2 & 4 in Pauley Pavilion.
