Three Bruins have been named to Capital One Academic All-District Teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. These selections recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Senior pole vaulter Liz Goodrich (Psychobiology major, 3.82 cumulative GPA) and junior long jumper Michael Perry (Music major, 3.96 cumulative GPA) were both awarded First Team selections, and redshirt senior distance runner Katja Goldring (Mathematics major, 3.66 cumulative GPA) has been named to Second Team honors.
For all three athletes, this is their first selection to CoSIDA Academic honors. But such accolades are nothing new to the scholarly veterans. All three have been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every year since arriving to Westwood, and their résumés account for a combined four Pac-12 Conference All-Academic selections as well as an All-Academic honorable mention (Goldring) from the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Association.
Goldring, Goodrich and Perry most recently saw action in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships this past weekend in Austin, where they each fought hard for qualifying spots for next week's NCAA Championships. Perry, who has exploded in his junior campaign, had a best jump of 7.36m/24-1.75 to finish 23rd overall and did not advance. Goldring, too, just fell short of qualifying, finishing 15th overall in the women's 10,000m (35:24.77), three spots out of qualifying position. Finally, Goodrich cleared 3.71m/12-2 but was unable to get over on 3.86m/12-8, finishing 28th.
