Ojai, Calif. - Members of the UCLA women's tennis team began play at the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai. Calif., as the 113th edition of the tournament kicked off on Thursday.
Freshman Kyle McPhillips enjoyed the best performance of any Bruin player in the Championship draw, winning two matches to advance to Friday's quarterfinals. She opened her day with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Colorado's Julyette Steur in the first round. McPhillips notched another straight-set win in the second round, downing Arizona's Kim Stubbe, 6-3, 6-3. Awaiting the third-seeded McPhillips in the quarterfinals is top-seeded Zsofia Susanya of Cal.
Also competing in the main singles draw for UCLA were Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez. Both players dropped their first-round matches on Thursday, with Dolehide falling 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to fourth-seeded Jacqueline Cako of ASU, and Montez losing 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 to Utah's Tereza Bekerova.
In the Invitational singles draw, Skylar Morton moved into the quarterfinals following two wins, beating both Kelly Chui and Annie Goransson of Cal. Holly Fleming and Morgan Thomas both dropped first-round matches on Thursday.
Doubles play begins on Friday.
