LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's tennis team ascended to the No. 1 ranking in America on Tuesday, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its weekly rankings ahead of this week's Pac-12 Championships.
The Bruins (22-1) are coming off of a 4-3 victory over cross-town rival USC last Friday, a win that clinched the program's second-straight Pac-12 regular-season championship.
UCLA now focuses its attention on the Pac-12 Championships, which begin this Wednesday in Ojai, Calif. The Bruins are the top seed in the eight-team draw and will not take the court until Friday's semifinals (opponent TBA). In other men's tennis news on Tuesday, sophomore Dennis Novikov was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after winning both of his matches in the victory over USC. Novikov, who is ranked 25th nationally in singles, downed No. 14 Ray Sarmiento, 6-4, 6-2 at court No. 1 to clinch the victory for UCLA. Novikov also teamed with Marcos Giron at No. 1 doubles, downing Yannick Hanfmann and Sarmiento, 8-6.
It marks the fourth Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for Novikov this year. He is the only player in the conference to earn the award multiple times.
