LOS ANGELES - Student-athletes from UCLA's athletic teams will have called over 5,200 Wooden Athletic Fund donors by the end of next week, thanking them for their support of UCLA Athletics over the past year.
A selection of UCLA football and women's volleyball players, in addition to swimming and diving student-athletes, spent nearly three hours on the phone late Monday afternoon and into the evening calling donors to express their appreciation.
"It's definitely great to be able to interact with fans like this," said Dietrich Riley, a junior safety on the football team. "Hearing them answer the phone and express how much they're looking forward to our football season means a lot to me. Without the support of our loyal fans, we wouldn't be able to have this experience at UCLA. Taking some time out of our day to call these people and express our thanks is one way of showing them that we really care."
The week-long event emphasizes how members of the Wooden Athletic Fund provide invaluable support for 700-plus UCLA student-athletes. Every gift has a positive impact on the ability of the student-athletes to succeed, not only in competition, but also in the classroom and the community.
"Spending my evening on the phone with our donors has been a really fun experience," said Kelly Reeves, a junior outside hitter on the women's volleyball team. "I'm sitting up here next to two of my teammates, we've spent over 30 minutes making a lot of phone calls, and I've really enjoyed it. It's fun to go somewhat behind the scenes and talk to our fans and donors to show our appreciation and help promote UCLA Athletics."
More than $11.5 million in charitable donations received by the Wooden Athletic Fund in 2012 have helped provide UCLA student-athletes with more than twice the scholarship funding that was available 10 years ago.
