Senior outfielder B.B. Bates (Victorville, Calif./Victor Valley HS) of the UCLA softball team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week (Apr. 29-May 5).
Bates continued her torrid hitting, producing seven hits in nine at-bats (.778) with three home runs, 11 runs batted in and six runs scored. The senior produced a slugging percentage of 2.111 and an on base of .818.
Bates leads the Bruins with 23 home runs and 70 runs batted in. The 23 homers are the third most in a single-season in Bruin history, while the 70 RBI are tied for fifth most in one UCLA season. The senior is currently carrying a career-high, 11-game hitting streak and also has RBI in 10 in a row.
Bates began the week with a 3-for-4 performance against Loyola Marymount, falling a homer shy of the cycle while driving in two and scoring twice. She doubled and scored in the first inning and tripled and scored in the second. In the sixth with her team up by only two runs, Bates added some insurance with a two-run single to make it a four-run game.
In game one of a Saturday doubleheader versus CSU Bakersfield, Bates established a new career high in RBI with seven and posted her seventh career, two-homer contest. After drawing a bases-loaded walk and coming around to score in the second, Bates produced three-run homers in back-to-back at-bats in the third and fourth innings to give her seven RBI, which was one shy of the school record.
In Saturday's nightcap, Bates belted another homer, a two-run shot, in her first at-bat to make it homers in three consecutive at-bats. She added a single in the second and a walk in the fourth.
This is Bates' first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
