Des Moines, Iowa -UCLA senior Turquoise Thompson placed sixth in the women's 400m hurdles final on the last day of competition at the 2013 USA Track & Field Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Running in lane seven, Thompson's time of 55.63 was sixth overall. Thompson's performance caps a successful Spring campaign. At the recently completed NCAA Outdoor in Eugene, OR, she finished third in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best mark of 54.99 (No. 5 UCLA all-time) to earn her third-consecutive first-team All-America honor. Thompson was the runner-up in the event at both the 2011/2012 NCAA Outdoor and placed sixth overall in the 2012 U. S. Olympic Trials.
Several Bruin alumni competed in Sunday's finals. In the men's 800m final, Brandon Johnson placed third (1:43.97) and becomes part of Team USA that will compete at the upcoming World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Moscow, Russia, Aug. 10-18. As a Bruin, Johnson is one of the school's top men's 400m hurdlers. In 2005, his mark of 48.59 is No. 3 all-time in UCLA history.
"It feels amazing," Johnson said. "Hard work ... don't stop believing in yourself. I'm a true testament to that. You can literally do whatever you want. If you would have told me I was going to run an 800m two years ago I would have told you you're crazy. "In the prelims when I ran 1:44 I knew I was going to run strong in the finals. I didn't think there were too many people that could pass me in the last 200m because I'm strong and I'm fast. I'm adjusting in the 800m and we're going to get use to running fast."
In the women's pole vault final, Katy Viuf finished fifth overall, with a vault of 14-5.25/4.40m. As a Bruin in 2010, her collegiate best mark of 14-3.25 is No. 4 UCLA all-time.
In the men's 110m hurdles semi-finals, Kevin Craddock II, running in heat one, placed sixth with a time of 13.55/w+2.6. His mark was 12th overall and he did not advance to the final held later Sunday afternoon. In school history, Craddock's time of 13.46 (2008) is No. 2 (tied) all-time.
