Omaha, Neb. - UCLA's Pat Valaika and David Berg have earned first-team ABCA Rawlings All-West Region honors, as announced this week by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Valaika was also selected as one of nine players in the nation to earn NCAA Division I Rawlings Gold Glove Team honors. The Valencia, Calif. native was picked as the nation's representative at shortstop to go along with his Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. This is the second year in a row that a UCLA player has been named to the Rawlings Gold Glove Team, as former UCLA outfielder Beau Amaral was selected to the team in 2012.

Berg, the 2013 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and NCBWA Stopper of the Year, has posted a record of 7-0 with 23 saves while leading the Pac-12 with a 0.96 ERA. Berg's 23 saves are also a new UCLA single-season record and are tied for the most saves in a single season in Division I history, matching Jack Krawczyk's (USC) 23 in 1998 and Tyler Roger's (Austin Peay) 23 in 2013. In addition, he is second in the country in WHIP (walks and hits allowed per innings pitched) with a mark of 0.85 and has 24 career saves, the most all-time in UCLA history.

The Covina, Calif. native has also given up the fewest runs (8) and second-fewest walks (11) and hits (53) in the Pac-12, while appearing in the most games in the country (49), two shy of the NCAA Division I single-season record. At one point this season, the first team All-American did not allow a run in 37 consecutive innings, which was the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the nation this season. In the postseason this year, Berg has recorded five saves while finishing all eight of UCLA's NCAA postseason games.

Valaika became the first UCLA player to win Defensive Player of the Year honors from the conference and has started every game at shortstop for the Bruins this year. He has committed only six errors in 267 chances. At the plate, Valaika is batting .250 while leading UCLA in doubles (14), triples (3), home runs (5), RBI (46), walks (33) and slugging percentage (.396). He is also second on the team with 17 multi-hit games and was one of 14 semifinalists for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award. In conference play, Valaika led the Bruins with 20 RBI and a .410 slugging percentage.

The ABCA West Regional teams are nominated and selected by the 38 West Regional Division I coaches. The NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team is chosen by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

UCLA (47-17) will play Mississippi State in the College World Series Finals, which are a best of three format, beginning on Monday at 5 p.m. PT at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. The game will be televised live by ESPN.
