Team USA and Brazil Open Pool Play with 8-8 Draw

KAZAN, Russia -- Attacker Paul Reynolds scored two goals late in the fourth period as Team USA and Brazil ended with an 8-8 draw on July 5 in a Group B Preliminary Round matchup at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Seven different players scored goals for Team USA.

Danilo Correa opened the scoring with a shot from two meters at the 5:05 mark of the first period to give Brazil a 1-0 lead. Center Lucas Reynolds tied it at 1-1 with 3:33 on a penalty shot. Utility Danny McClintick gave Team USA a 2-1 lead with a goal from five meters with 2:11 remaining in the first period. Anderson Cruz Soares tied it at 2-2 to end the first quarter scoring with 48 seconds left.

Brazil jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second period when Correa scored his second goal of the game on a power play with 6:58 to go. Then Adrian Baches Delgado scored back-to-back goals for Brazil (penalty goal at 5:06 and a goal from five meters at 4:02). Defender Anthony Daboub began the Americans comeback with a power play goal with 3:33 left in the second to make it 5-3. Attacker Paul Pickell scored from a shot at center off a nice feed from Paul Reynolds with 1:49 left to close the gap to 5-4. Attacker Ryder Roberts then knotted the score with a shot from the frontcourt with three seconds left to send the two teams into halftime, tied at 5-5.

Both teams played solid defense in the third period, allowing just one goal. Team USA regained the lead at 6-5 with an exclusion goal by attacker Chris Fahlsing (assist by McClintick) with 5:55 left in the third. Bernardo Rocha got the equalizer at 6-6 on a shot from five meters at the 3:16 mark of the third period.

Brazil jumped out to an 8-6 advantage on a goal from five meters by Gustavo Guimaraes (5:26) and then a goal from the frontcourt (2:50) by Baches Delgado, which completed his hat trick. Team USA, which had been on a scoring drought of 11:32, trimmed the Brazilian lead to 8-7 on a shot from distance by Paul Reynolds (Daboub with the assist) with 2:23 remaining. Then after the Americans drew a penalty shot, Paul Reynolds converted it with 1:35 to go to end the scoring at 8-8.

Team USA goalkeeper Garrett Danner was credited with five saves in the cage. Thye Bezerra was credited with eight stops in goal for Brazil.

Paul Reynolds won all four sprints for Team USA and tied Danner for the team lead in steals with two. McClintick picked up a team-high three field blocks.

Up next for Team USA is a pool play game against Montenegro on July 7. The game will be televised live on ESPNU at 4:30 a.m. (PT) on Sunday morning. Montenegro lost its opening game against defending World University Games champion, Serbia, 9-5.
