Wruck, UCLA's first-ever finalist for the prestigious award, dominated in the discus during the 2013 season, re-writing the record books and going undefeated in eight collegiate events en route to his second NCAA outdoor championship. Wruck also recorded each of the Top 27 collegiate throws in 2013.
On June 1, Wruck unleashed the best throw ever by a collegian, throwing 68.16m/223-7 at the Claremont Throws meet. That throw would have bested the collegiate record by nearly two feet. In the postseason, he swept through the competition, winning the Pac-12 Championship with a conference meet record throw of 65.41m/214-7, qualifying with the top mark at the NCAA Preliminaries and then winning the NCAA Championship with a throw of 64.94/213-0.
Voting will take place from July 29-Aug. 13. The results of the online fan vote will account for one full vote in the overall balloting process.
Paper balloting by The Bowerman Advisory Board, past winners, selected media personnel, statisticians, and collegiate administrators, is also underway until later this month. An independent accounting firm will collect, tabulate, and certify final results and will keep the result secret until the envelope is opened in December.
The award, in its fifth year of existence, will be presented in a ceremony at the USTFCCCA Convention on December 18 at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla.
