UCLA Baseball Players Earn More All-America Honors
By: UCLA Athletics

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Junior right-hander David Berg and former UCLA pitchers Nick Vander Tuig and Adam Plutko have received All-America honors from CollegeBaseballInsider.com/Louisville Slugger. Berg was named Pitcher of the Year and earned first-team honors from the publication while Vander Tuig received second-team accolades. Plutko was an honorable mention selection.

Berg went 7-0 in his sophomore season, logging a 0.92 ERA and an NCAA-record 24 saves for the national champion Bruins. A CBI honorable mention honoree in 2012, Berg had a scoreless-innings streak of 37 innings and finished second in the country in ERA and fourth in WHIP (0.84). Opponents hit .190 off the right-handed sidearmer, who became the first player in NCAA history to appear in 50 or more games in back-to-back seasons.

Serving as UCLA's closer for the majority of the year, Berg matched the NCAA single-season record for most appearances in a season with 51, increasing his own Pac-12 and school records in the process. He also became the first UCLA pitcher to lead the Pac-12 in ERA in back-to-back seasons and became the first reliever in conference history to be named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, the Covina, Calif. native was awarded the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, given out to the nation's top relief pitcher, and captured first-team All-America honors from Baseball America, the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball.

Vander Tuig served as UCLA's Saturday starter all season, making 19 starts and going 14-4 with a 2.16 ERA. He led the Bruins in strikeouts with 93 and surrendered only 18 walks,  the eighth-fewest allowed in the Pac-12. The Oakdale, Calif. native tossed at least six innings in 17 of his 19 starts on the year, helping lead UCLA to its first NCAA Championship in program history. In four postseason starts, he went 4-0, logging a 1.65 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 27.1 innings pitched, earning All-CWS honors and securing the victory in UCLA's championship-clinching victory over Mississippi State on June 25. Vander Tuig was selected in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants and is currently pitching with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in Single-A, shortened-season.

Plutko spent the 2013 season as UCLA's Friday starter, posting a 10-3 record in 19 starts. He compiled 81 strikeouts in 124 innings pitched, allowing an opposing batting average of .208 against him while earning All-Pac-12 honors for the third consecutive season. In four postseason starts, Plutko went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and a .206 opposing batting average, walking only five batters in the entire postseason. He was named to the NCAA Los Angeles Regional All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year and was selected as the College World Series' Most Outstanding Player. Like Vander Tuig, Plutko was also selected in the 2013 MLB Draft, being chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 11th round.
