SZOMBATHELY, Hungary -- The USA Men's Junior National Team topped Australia 13-11 on Aug. 17 in a high scoring affair to advance to the fifth-place match of the FINA Men's Junior World Championship.

Bret Bonanni and Alex Bowen scored four goals each in the win while McQuin Baron and UCLA's Garrett Danner combined for eight saves in the cage (each made four stops).

Three UCLA incoming freshmen scored, led by Jack Fellner's two goals. Chancellor Ramirez and Ryder Roberts each scored one goal in the win.

The two teams spent the first period trading goals. After Australia scored the first goal of the match on a power play, Bowen answered with his first goal to even the match at 1-1. Bowen scored the team's second goal, this one on a power play to tie it at 2-2 with 3:17 left in the period. Fellner ended the scoring in the opening period with :40 remaining to even the score at 3-3 going to the second. 

Jackson Kimbell started off the second period with a goal for the United States and then Bowen followed with his third tally for a 5-3 lead with 6:04 left in the first half. Australia responded with three straight goals to retake the lead at 6-5 with 2:41 to go. Bonanni stopped the Aussie run with a goal and evened the score at 6-6, but Australia would have the last word scoring late in the period to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

The United States dominated the third period, running off three unanswered goals to build a 9-7 lead. Bonanni scored the first two and the last was by Roberts. The Americans nearly pitched a shutout in the period but Australia connected on a score from two meters with no time remaining in the quarter to leave the United States ahead 9-8 heading into the fourth.

Team USA's offense kept up the attack to the start the fourth with Bowen and Bonanni cashing in early to build an 11-8 lead. Australia scored two in a row to close to within 11-10 with 2:51 to go. Fellner hit again to rebuild a two-goal lead at 12-10 with 2:29 left. Australia tried one last rally scoring with 1:28 remaining but Ramirez would have the final word, scoring with 24 seconds left to seal the victory at 13-11.

The United States was 2-for-3 on power plays and 2-for-2 on penalty shots (both by Bonanni) while Australia was 1-for-2 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot.
