No. 2 UCLA Opens 2013 with Two Lopsided Victories

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team opened the 2013 season with a pair of lopsided victories at the UCLA Invitational today at Spieker Aquatics Center. After a pair of exhibition games against MPSF foes in the morning, the Bruins posted a 17-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the afternoon and then a 19-2 win in the nightcap against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Sophomore Danny McClintick score the first goal of the 20113 season to put UCLA up 1-0 at the 6:54 mark of the first period against Pomona-Pitzer. After the Sagehens tied it at 1-1 two minutes later, Reynolds scored on a power play (4:18). Freshman Chancellor Ramirez scored with 3:55 left in the first to put the Bruins up 3-1, then Reynolds struck again to make it 4-1 (2:13). Freshman Gordon Marshall ended the first quarter scoring with a 6-on-5 goal to put the Bruins up 5-1 at the end of one.

Senior Aimone Barabino opened the scoring in the second period with a penalty goal (7:02). After Pomona-Pitzer made it 6-2, Ramirez found the back of the cage for a second time, this one on an extra man opportunity (4:57). The Sagehens scored again to pull to with 7-3, senior Paul Pickell scored back-to-back goals at full strength (3:34 and 1:10) to give the Bruins a 9-3 lead at halftime.

The third period belonged to the Bruins as they blanked Pomona-Pitzer 5-0. Redshirt freshmen Cody Moore and Alec Zwaneveld scored back-to-back goals (7:31 and 6:11) to make it 11-3. Then McClintick added his second of the game (5:41) and the rout was on. Junior Christopher Meinhold scored an exclusion goal to make it 13-3 (3:40) and Marshall added his second goal to end the third period with UCLA leading 14-3.

The Bruins made it 10 straight unanswered goal in the fourth as Meinhold added another power play goal (5:02). Then a pair of freshmen, Lovre Milos (3:41) and Ryder Roberts (2:49) scored goals at full strength to lead 17-3. Pomona-Pitzer scored a power play goal with 2:03 left in the game to end the scoring at 17-4.

The Bruins were 5-for-8 on power plays and 1-for-1 on penalty shots while the Sagehens were 1-for-5 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot.

Junior Stephen White had six saves in goal in the first half for UCLA while redshirt junior James Hartshorne tallied four stops in the second half.

In the nightcap, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened the scoring with a power play goal on its first possession to take a 1-0 lead at the 7:24 mark of the first period. But the UCLA Bruins reeled off 17 straight goals and never looked back. Junior Paul Reynolds scored his first goal of the day to tie it at 1-1 (7:13). He then scored a power play goal to put the Bruins up 2-1 (4:56). Then seniors Lucas Reynolds and Pickell made it 5-1 with three goals (two by Reynolds). Zwaneveld ended the scoring in the first period with a power play goal with :05 left to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead.

Redshirt freshman Erik Najarian scored the first goal of his career to open the scoring in the second period (5:50). Senior defender Chris Wendt kept the momentum with his first goal of the year (4:48) and junior Daniel Lenhart added his first of 2013 (3:36) as the Bruins were rolling, up 9-1. Lenhart then scored on a power play (:56) and Najarian added another 6-on-5 score to hand the Bruins an 11-1 lead at the break. 

The third period again belonged to the Bruins as they blanked C-M-S 5-0 for the second straight quarter. Freshman Jack Fellner opened the scoring (7:22) with the first of five full strength goals by UCLA in the third. Marshall made it 13-1 (6:35) and then McClintick scored his only goal against the Stags (2:59). Milos found the back of the net to make it 15-1 (1:28) and then Zwaneveld scored his second of the game to end the third period scoring with UCLA leading 16-1.

Redshirt freshman Patrick Woepse scored the first goal of his career to start the scoring in the fourth (7:28). After a power play goal by the Stags ended the Bruins' 17 straight goals, Meinhold answered with a power play goal of his own (4:39) to put UCLA up 18-2. Marshall scored his second of the game (3:48) to end the scoring at 19-2.

The Bruins were 5-for-8 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was 2-for-3 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner had four saves in 1 1/2 quarters of action while White had one save in one quarter and Hartshorne tallied six stops in 1 1/2 quarters in the cage.
