Junior midfielder Sam Mewis is blogging for UCLABruins.com during the 2013 season. Mewis is a regular with the U.S. Women's Youth National Team and a two-time all-conference selection who has scored 30 points on 10 goals and 10 assists in her career.
Friday was a great end to last week as we beat SDSU, 2-0, with goals from Kodi Lavrusky and Abby Dahlkemper. The game was challenging, but we came away with the win due to a strong effort from everybody on the team.
We all wore the number 36 around our wrists in honor of UCLA football player Nick Pasquale, who tragically passed away last week. We would like to give our condolences to the Pasquale family and to our fellow Bruin athletes who have been affected by this loss.
On Saturday, we had a solid practice in preparation of a much-needed two-day break on Sunday and Monday. After practice, about seven of us went to a really cool outdoor concert for the day. It was a lot of fun and nice to get away from campus and relax for a while. On Sunday, the men's team had a tough game against USD in the afternoon. Most of us were there supporting them as they won 3-2 in overtime.
A few of us stopped by Ally Courtnall’s beautiful house on Monday to visit with her family and have dinner. We were able to sit by the pool for a little while and have a delicious dinner prepared by her parents. It’s so nice to have a home-cooked meal once in a while. Sometimes it seems like all I eat is frozen dinners!
We got back after it on Tuesday with a great practice. The two-day break definitely left us all feeling refreshed and ready to play again. We know that we have a really important weekend ahead of us with two away games again Pepperdine and LMU. Both teams have been consistently challenging in the past for us, so we will definitely have to be at our best on Friday and Sunday.
Fall quarter finally starts next week! It’ll definitely be an adjustment having classes during the week again. I’m looking forward to completing some more of my requirements and also to an interesting English class that is on my schedule this quarter. It’s crazy to think that we are already seven games into season and that the start of school marks another milestone - 10 weeks until the College Cup!
It’s easy to forget how young the freshmen really are ... Lauren Kaskie turned 18 this week! Happy Birthday, Lauren!
That’s all for this week. I’ll be back next week to tell you about our weekend games and the rest of the team’s adventures! Go Bruins!
