Student-athletes from various sports were in attendance to learn about the inner workings of entertainment public relations through an engaged conversation with an experienced panel. UCLA alum and Executive Vice President of Rogers & Cowan Alan Nierob moderated the panel, which consisted of Rogers & Cowan CEO Tom Tardio, VP of Personalities Jeff Raymond, Group Music Manager Jessica Erskine, VP of Personalities Shannon Barr, Account Coordinator Natalie Campos and Co-Chairman of Personalities and UCLA alum Paul Bloch.
The event began with a social hour, where student-athletes had the chance to casually mix and mingle with the panelists and practice introductions and skills such as eye-contact and speaking clearly. Then the five panelists sat down with the group and explained their journey from college to their current position. Tardio stressed the importance of being "passionate about competing", while Bruin moderator Nierob, who is also a guest lecturer for Communication Studies majors at UCLA, emphasized "being resourceful, never taking no for an answer and using all your contacts."
Men’s soccer team captain and Academic All-American Joe Sofia said, "It was a great opportunity to listen to and learn from the people who are at the forefront of the PR industry. Their insight and advice on how to position yourself as a potential job candidate was invaluable."
This event is one of many resources offered to both current and former UCLA student-athletes through the Bruin Varsity Club and the first of its kind for Rogers & Cowan, who has already agreed to make this an annual event.
"We are so grateful to Alan Nierob, Rogers & Cowan and the entire panel for opening their doors and hearts to our great Bruin student-athletes," said Bruin Varsity Club Director Courteney Bailey. "Their career insight, wisdom and experience, not to mention their ability to really connect with the students, was remarkable."
