UCLA Graduation Success Rates Continue to Increase
By: UCLA Athletics
UCLA student-athletes continue to succeed in the classroom, according to statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released Thursday by the NCAA.

UCLA's student-athlete GSR is 87%, up 3% from last year. The GSR is based on scholarship student-athletes who entered college as freshmen and transfers in the 2003-04 through 2006-07 classes and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left UCLA in good academic standing prior to the completion of their athletic eligibility.

Five Bruin squads - men's tennis, women's basketball, softball, women's tennis and women's water polo - had a GSR of 100 percent. Sixteen of UCLA's 20 sports programs had a GSR of 80 percent or higher, and 10 of the 20 sports were at 90 percent or higher. Additionally, 13 of the 20 sports are above the national average for that sport in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

UCLA has the second-highest overall GSR in the Pac-12 Conference at 87%, and the football team has the second-highest GSR among conference schools with 82%.

"At UCLA, the success of our student-athletes is measured not only by their performance in the arena of competition but in the classroom as well," said UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. "Once again our student-athletes have shown their ability to excel in both avenues, further proving that UCLA continues to stand as one of the premier athletic programs in the country."

The GSR is the NCAA's more comprehensive calculation of student-athlete academic success. The NCAA rate is more accurate than the federally-mandated methodology because it is more inclusive of the total student-athlete population. The GSR includes incoming transfers and students enrolling in the winter or spring quarters who receive athletics aid. Additionally, it deletes from the calculation student-athletes who leave an institution and were academically and athletically eligible to compete. The federal rate does neither.

The GSR for UCLA female student-athletes is 92 percent, while the rate for UCLA male student-athletes is 83 percent.
