No. 2 UCLA Earns First MPSF Win with 18-5 Victory at No. 8 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team earned its first MPSF win of 2013 with an 18-5 victory at No. 8 UC Irvine on Friday night at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Bruins improved to 20-2 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF while the Anteaters fell to 11-8 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Senior Aimone Barabino led the Bruins with three goals while Kyle Trush led UCI with two scores.

Barabino got the Bruins to a good start with a power play goal at the 6:19 mark and a goal from set with 5:35 left in the first period to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. Jacob Mourer got the Anteaters on the board with a goal from two meters (5:24), but the Bruins answered with three straight goals to lead 5-1. Freshman Lovre Milos scored a goal from the front court (5:12), senior Paul Pickell scored on a counter attack (3:38) and sophomore Danny McClintick added another power play goal (1:45) and the rout was on. After Trush scored his first of the game to trim the lead to 5-2 (1:19), junior Chris Fahlsing added another counter attack strike (:20) to end the scoring in the first, 6-2.

Fahlsing opened the second period with his second score of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (6:49) and then Barabino completed his hat trick with a goal from set (3:25) to put UCLA up 8-2. Trush closed the gap to 8-3 with his second of the game (1:37), but the Bruins ended the period with back-to-back goals from sophomore Anthony Daboub (power play, 1:01) and senior Lucas Reynolds (two meters, 0:15) to lead 10-3 at the break.

The Bruins jumped out to a 12-3 lead to start the third period when Milos scored his second of the game on a power play (6:15) and Daboub added his second on a counter attack (4:36). The Anteaters closed strong with two goals, trailing 12-5 heading into the fourth.

UCLA dominated the fourth period, posting another six goals while pitching a shutout. Lucas Reynolds scored his second of the game from set (7:36) and senior Chris Wendt found the back of the cage on a counter attack (6:59) to push the lead to 14-5. Junior Paul Reynolds scored his first of the game on a nice shot from the front court to extend it to 15-5 (5:54). Then freshman Gordon Marshall went to work at set, scoring two straight (4:04 and 2:57) to give the Bruins a 17-5 edge. Paul Reynolds capped the scoring with an exclusion goal (:38) to provide the final score of 18-5.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA, playing all four quarters, making 10 saves. Alex Kazmier manned the cage for UC Irvine and was credited with seven stops.

The Bruins return to action on Sunday, Oct. 27 when they host a double-header with No. 3 Pacific (1:00 p.m.) and an exhibition game with Long Beach City College (3:00 p.m.).
