LOS ANGELES - Junior Karsta Lowe led all players with 21 kills, while sophomore Maddy Klineman added 11 kills, but the Bruins fell in four sets to #3 Washington on Friday at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 13-25.

Senior Kelly Reeves was a kill shy of a double-double with nine to go with 13 digs. Senior Mariana Aquino had five kills and no errors in 10 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage with four blocks, while junior Zoë Nightingale posted seven kills. Junior Megan Moenoa added 44 assists, four digs and three kills and sophomore Karly Drolson had nine digs. The Bruins (11-8, 2-7 Pac-12) hit .235 for the match.

The opening set featured eight ties and five lead changes, with neither team leading by more than three points. Trailing 7-5, the Bruins went on a 6-2 run to take an 11-9 edge. Reeves had two kills during the run, Klineman, Nightingale and Moenoa had one kill apiece and Aquino and Lowe teamed up for a block. With UCLA still up 12-10, Washington scored five in a row to take a set-best lead of three at 15-12. Despite a tie at 18-all, the Huskies never relinquished the lead for the rest of the set.

At 18-15, three consecutive Reeves kills equaled things at 18. The Huskies netted the next two to go up 20-18 and eventually had three set points at 24-21. A Klineman kill and a Washington attack error staved off the first two attempts, but the third time was the charm for the visitors, as the Huskies claimed the opener 25-23. Lowe led the Bruins with six kills, while Klineman and Reeves added five apiece. The Bruins out-hit the Huskies .500 to .424.

Set two was even closer than the first with 13 ties and six lead changes. The first time anyone led by more than one was when UCLA took a 10-8 lead. Trailing 7-6, a 4-1 run on two Aquino kills, a Reeves kill and a Washington attack error put the Bruins up by two. Washington took the lead back with a 3-0 run to make it 11-10 and maintained a three-point advantage at 17-14 until UCLA made its run.

Six in a row for the Bruins put the home team up 20-17. A service error started the run, which was followed by a Lowe kill and a combo block from Lowe and Aquino. A Moenoa ace gave UCLA the lead, while a Washington attack error and a Lowe kill made it a three-point advantage. The Huskies got the next two to get to within one at 20-19, but a 5-2 UCLA run to end the set, punctuated by a Nightingale kill, clinched a 25-21 victory. Lowe had five kills in the second, while Aquino added three, as the Bruins out-hit the Huskies .290 to .206.

The Huskies jumped out to a 5-1 lead to open set three, but UCLA battled back with an 11-4 run to go ahead 12-9. Trailing 9-7, the Bruins scored five straight on a Lowe kill, a Nightingale solo block, two Washington attack errors and a triple roof by Nightingale, Klineman and Moenoa to make it a three-point difference. With the Bruins up 16-14, the Huskies scored three straight to go back up 17-16.

A Lowe kill and a Reeves ace put the Bruins back up, and after Washington scored two in a row to go ahead again, back-to-back Lowe kills made it 20-19 UCLA. The Bruins still led 22-21 after a Moenoa dump, but the Huskies scored four of the final five points of the set to take it 25-23. Lowe had seven of the Bruins’ 14 kills in the third set, as the Bruins were out-hit .276 to .162.

UCLA never led in the fourth set, as Washington finished off the sweep. The Huskies jumped out to a 9-3 lead, but the Bruins cut it to three on two Washington errors and an Aquino kill. Washington countered with a 6-1 run to go up 15-7. A UW service, a Lowe kill and an Aquino/Klineman combo block cut the deficit to five at 15-10, but the Huskies scored 10 of the last 13 points to win the fourth 25-13. Klineman and Lowe each had three kills in the fourth, as the Bruins were out-hit .333 to -.033.

The Bruins host Washington State at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday at 7 p.m. Live video, audio and stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
