The top-ranked UCLA women’s golf team had something to prove Saturday.

Something along the lines that it's not a seventh-place team. Trailing the leaders by 12 shots entering the day, the Bruins accomplished something no other UCLA has ever done. They shattered the single round school record by going 16-under par and surging into contention at the Stanford Intercollegiate. UCLA vaulted from seventh place to second in the second round.

“The team showed great character with the bounce back today,” said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. “They were very determined to get back into the event, and for all of them to play so well was impressive.”

When UCLA finally posted its round of 268, the Bruins were one shot ahead of USC, which was still playing. The Trojans, who began the day at eight-under par, a dozen shots in front of the Bruins, would finally post an impressive round of their own, a 12-under par score of 272. They led the field at 20-under 548. UCLA was second at 556 (-12), followed by Washington at 566 (-2). Stanford was fourth at even par 568 and Pepperdine was fifth at 569 (+1).

Individually, junior Erynne Lee fired a six-under par 66 to lead UCLA. She had made seven birdies through 13 holes before making a bogey at the 14th and posting four straight pars to end her round. She was tied for 10th at 140 (-2). Sophomore Louise Ridderstrom and freshman Alison Lee each posted scores of 67 (-4). For Ridderstrom, who was tied for sixth at 139 (-3), the round was her lowest as a collegian. Alison Lee was tied for second at 136 (-6). Junior Ani Gulugian posted her best round of the season, a three-under par 68, and was tied for 12th at 141 (-1). Finally, freshman Bronte Law had the “drop” score of 71 (E) and was tied for 37th at 146 (+4).

Junior Brittan Mai and Yvonne Zheng played as individuals and were 85th and 90th, respectively.

USC’s Sophia Popov was the 36-hole leader at 133 (-9) following a second round 67 (-4).
