POSTGAME QUOTES
UCLA head coach Steve Alford

opening statement
"I was really pleased with the guys being able to play against a team that was very aggressive offensively. It was a little different with [Cal State San Marcos] because they don't have much of a post presence. They play five out, dribble drive and matchup zone defensively. Our guys have not had a lot of work against those things, like Tony [Parker] and David [Wear] having to guard the dribble drive tonight. I thought our guys handled a lot of things well.

“To score 109 points and have only 11 turnovers were things that I was really impressed with. We have to do a better job out of media timeouts, though, executing what we want to do offensively and defensively. Our half court execution has a long way to go, but through two exhibition games I like our pace and our decision-making. I thought our decision-making tonight was much better than the other night. I saw some strides in those areas, and I'm really pleased with the two exhibition games. The guys will now have a day off and start preparations for Drexel on Wednesday."

on sophomore Tony Parker
"Tony's been terrific. We have to remember that he averaged about six minutes a game last year, and now he's playing 25 minutes plus. With Travis down, we don't have a lot of guys rotating in the middle so he and David have been tremendous. David and Tony both have to step up big, especially in the early season because we're without Wanaah and Travis through at least the first two games. In regard to Tony, I really think he started to develop his confidence when he lost some weight. He dropped 20 pounds and started moving better and has now started flowing better on offense and defense. Tonight he was really good."

on the team's three-point shooting
"We know we have guys who can make shots, and if you just look at stats we've made five of almost 30. But we're still averaging about 103 points a game. I think that's going to end up being a strength of ours because we know that we have guys who can make the three-point shot. Overall, I like our pace. We're shooting over 50 percent through the exhibition season and scoring a lot of points while moving the ball well."

Cal State San Marcos head coach Jim Saia
"We played a tough game at San Diego State. We ran out of gas a little bit against a pretty good, prepared UCLA team. Coach Alford is a great coach, and he's very cerebral, so he did a good job against some of the stuff we did against them. We weren't prepared for his matchup zone, and that was kind of the difference in the game in the first half."

"Obviously, transition defense and rebounding have been our weakness. When you play a Division I team, it hurt us. It hurt us against San Diego State, and it definitely hurt us against UCLA. UCLA is a good team, that's why they're UCLA."
