Mew's Views

Junior midfielder Sam Mewis is blogging for UCLABruins.com during the 2013 season. Mewis is a regular with the U.S. Women's Youth National Team and a two-time all-conference selection who has scored 37 points on 13 goals and 11 assists in her career.

It’s been an awesome week to be a Bruin as we have gotten to experience a little bit of everything - charity, children, and ... a Championship!

On Halloween we were fortunate enough to participate in the event at Mattel Children’s Hospital and hand out treats to the kids who came around the hospital trick-or-treating. It was a lot of fun for us to get dressed up and especially to help make Halloween memorable for the kids who are in the hospital. We were with a bunch of student-athletes, and it really was such a rewarding experience. The children all looked great and showed their Halloween spirit with creative and fun costumes.

HalloweenWe knew going into the weekend that two wins would ensure our Pac-12 title as champions, so we had been focused all week at practice in preparation. Friday’s game against Oregon State went exceptionally well; we were really playing our game and ended up winning, 3-0. It was such a good team win with three different players scoring goals and a great example of how well we can perform. Heading into Sunday’s game was exciting, because we could literally taste the championship it was so close. With the score tied at halftime, we came out in the second half with some tenacity and put the game away, 2-0.

Cassie Sternbach and Alana Munger dumped the Powerade cooler on Amanda’s head with five seconds left in the game, drenching her completely. It's on video, and it’s one of those things you can watch over and over - it gets funnier every time. Celebrating our Pac-12 title was a lot of fun, and we feel like we worked very hard for it. However, we are not nearly finished with this season, and we know that we will have a lot of hard work ahead of us (hopefully in the form of six victories in our tournament games!)

But before tournament starts, we have an extremely important matchup against USC tonight. This game is a traditional rivalry, and USC always presents themselves as a tough, tenacious opponent. Tonight, we also celebrate our seniors as it is our last regular season home game. Jenna Richmond, Ari Krakowsky, Alana Munger, Chelsea Stewart and Chelsea Braun have all been vital members of not only this 2013 team, but vital members of the program as a whole. Each individual has contributed great things to UCLA Women’s Soccer, and I think I speak for all of the Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen when I say that I am honored to have played on the same team as each of them.

After a great week of practice, I think that we are ready to face the challenge of USC, on Senior Night, as a team. Honoring our seniors while also getting to participate in one of the greatest rivalries in college sports is such an opportunity, and I think that we will face it head-on.

Make sure to be at Drake Stadium at 5pm tonight to watch us against USC, or catch the game on the Pac-12 Network. Also, make sure to check the NCAA Tournament Selection seedings on Monday to see our potential path to the Final Four! Go Bruins!
