NAME: Ashlee Powers

What are you looking forward to most about being a member of the team?

Being able to put on the blue and gold as well as running with such wonderful girls.

Why did you choose UCLA?

UCLA has been my dream school since I could remember. After being at SMU for a year, I got homesick and decided to pursue my dream.

How did your family react to your college decision?

It was hard on my family at first. My extended family was excited, but my immediate family felt I should give SMU more time and not give up my scholarship.

When did you begin competing and why?

I began competing in kindergarten for my elementary school with my older sister. Both of our parents ran, so naturally I wanted to be like them…I think I accomplished that…and more.

When did you realize you could compete at the Division 1 level?

I realized I could compete at D1 level at Notre Dame Invitational in 2012.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Individually, so far reaching my goal at Notre Dame of running a 16:50, I ran 16:49 overall though, my proudest accomplishment is going to Nike Cross Nationals in 2009 with my team--that was a great season team wise.

What has been the biggest adjustment you've had to make as a college athlete?

Sleep has definitely been an adjustment. I am still working on this adjustment, but with all the heavy training I am able to fall asleep much easier.

What goals do you have for this season?

For starters, I would like to run 20:30 for the 6k. The ultimate goals are to get All-region honors and make it to Nationals with the team.

Have you decided on or what is your major and why?

Originally I was economics, but with transferring, I may not get to pursue it, so now I have been considering IDS because I feel it applies more to who I am and can give me the tools to make a difference.

What are your plans after college?

The plan is to pursue post-collegiate running, if not, hopefully find something else I am passionate about and make a difference in this world.

Is there any other athlete, either professional or collegiate, that inspires you?

Yes, Ryan Hall and Sara Hall. Both have such a strong passion for running and God I hope to one day follow their steps.

Athletes have strict diet regimens, but if there is one food you cannot live without, what is it?

Ice cream or Froyo, I struggle going a week without it.

What's on your iPod right now?

I have music from Alt-j to Justin Bieber to walk the moon.
