On Deck This Week
Third-seeded UCLA (27-2, 7-1 MPSF) heads to Pacific for the 2013 MPSF Tournament. The winner will earn the league’s automatic berth to next week’s NCAA Championship (Dec. 7-8) at Stanford. The Bruins open with sixth-seeded UC Santa Barbara (16-9 overall, 3-5 MPSF) on Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m.

Series Meetings
UCLA is 96-17-1 all-time vs. UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins defeated the Gauchos 10-4 earlier this year in the quarterfinals of the NorCal Invitational on Sept. 21 and won 10-7 in an MPSF contest on “Senior Day” on Nov. 17. Junior attacker Paul Reynolds led the Bruins with a hat trick in both games against UCSB this season.

Recapping Last Week
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team earned a share of the regular season MPSF crown with a 10-9 come-from-behind win in double overtime over No. 4 USC on Nov. 21 at Spieker Aquatics Center on ESPNU. The Bruins ended the regular season at 27-2 overall and 7-1 in the MPSF and moved into a three-way tie for first place (with Pacific and Stanford). The Trojans dropped to 23-4 overall and 5-3 in the league. Freshman Ryder Roberts scored the game-winner as time expired at the end of the second overtime period. It is the sixth-consecutive game between the two teams to be decided by one goal and the second straight game to go into overtime. Junior Paul Reynolds, senior Lucas Reynolds and sophomore Danny McClintick each scored two goals to lead the Bruins while Mace Rapsey scored a hat trick to lead the Trojans.

Defensive Dynamos
UCLA’s defense has been stellar for most of the season, allowing only USC, Pacific and Concordia to score more than eight goals. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Garrett Danner leads the MPSF in goals against average (5.84 gaa) while UCLA leads the MPSF, allowing just 5.31 gpg.

Freshman Forces
UCLA freshmen are making huge contributions in 2013. In addition to redshirt freshman goalkeeper Garrett Danner, there are six more freshmen playing heavy minutes. The freshmen account for 37.4 percent of the team’s scoring (152-of-406 goals). Freshman Lovre Milos is tied for 2nd on the team with 36 goals. Freshman Ryder Roberts is 5th on the team in scoring (31 goals) while freshman Gordon Marshall is tied for 6th with 26 goals. Freshmen Jack Fellner (21 goals) and Chancellor Ramirez (17 goals) are 10th and 12th, respectively. Roberts is currently 2nd on the team in assists (41) while Danner (57) and Roberts (35) are 1st and 3rd on the squad in steals.

Danner Ready To Break 19-Year-Old Record
Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner ranks third on the UCLA single season chart with 231 saves. He needs seven to move into second (Dan Hackett, 237, 1991) and 20 to become the all-time leader (Matt Swanson, 250, 1994). Additionally, his 5.84 goals against average ranks as the seventh-best average in a single season. Only Brandon Brooks (1999 & 2000), Chay Lapin (2006 & 2009), Mike Van Der Waerdt (1988) and Joseph Axelrad (2004) have had lower averages.

Against Ranked Teams
The Bruins are 21-2 (.913) against ranked teams in 2013. On the season, UCLA has outscored its opposition by 8.69 goals per game (406-154, 14.00-5.31 gpg). The Bruins are outscoring ranked teams by 6.30 goals per game (279-134, 12.13-5.83 gpg).

Wright On Deck For Year Five
The Bruins are led by fifth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 122-25 (.830) record, including a 33-9 (.786) mark in MPSF action. He won his 100th game earlier this year with the 10-4 victory over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals of the SoCal Tournament (Sept. 21). Wright played at UCLA from 1997-2000, leading the Bruins to NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2000. He played for the USA National Team in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Wright played for the National Team in every major international tournament from 2001-12. He has guided the Bruins to two MPSF Tournament titles and three runner-up finishes at the NCAA Tournament in his four complete seasons at the helm. In 2009 and 2011, UCLA won the MPSF Tournament title. He has guided the Bruins to the title match of the NCAA Tournament in three of his four seasons (2009, 2011, 2012). Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading UCLA to the MPSF Tournament title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament.
