Five Bruins Earn NSCAA Academic Honors

They were champions on the field and champions in the classroom. Five members of the NCAA Champion UCLA women's soccer team received NSCAA academic honors in 2013. A school-record three Bruins - Abby Dahlkemper, Sarah Killion and Jenna Richmond - earned first-team NSCAA Scholar All-America honors, and two others – Ally Courtnall and Sam Mewis - received second-team Scholar All-West Region honors.

Dahlkemper, a junior defender, holds a 3.37 GPA in Sociology and Education. A three-time NSCAA All-American, Dahlkemper is a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and the Honda Award for soccer. She led a UCLA defense to a nation's best team goals against average of 0.30 and to a school-record 18 shutouts. Dahlkemper earned second-team Capital One Academic All-District honors this season and is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree.

Killion, a junior midfielder and team co-captain, is a Psychology major with a 3.65 GPA and a Capital One Academic All-District and two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree. A two-time NSCAA All-Pacific Region first-team honoree, Killion led the Pac-12 in assists with 12, the third-highest single-season assist total in UCLA history. She also contributed one goal, the game-winner at California, and earned All-Tournament honors at the College Cup.

Richmond, a senior midfielder and team co-captain, holds a 3.49 GPA in Sociology and also earned Capital One Academic All-District this season and is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree. Richmond was selected to the NSCAA All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-12 first teams and contributed three goals and five assists on the year. She finished her career with 91 games played, 90 starts, 12 goals and 23 assists for 47 points. Richmond's assist and games started totals rank sixth on UCLA's career charts.

Courtnall, a junior defender, holds a 3.45 GPA in Communication Studies and is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree. Courtnall was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player at the College Cup and scored the game-tying goal in the NCAA semifinals against Virginia.

Mewis, a junior midfielder, is an English major with a 3.47 GPA and a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic and three-time All-Pac-12 selection. Mewis ranked third on the team in scoring in 2013 with six goals, nine assists and 21 points. She tied two school records this year by recording three assists in a game (vs. USC) and five assists in the NCAA Tournament.

The three first-team Scholar All-Americans are the most from any one school this year and a school record.
