By: UCLA Athletics

Seniors Joe Sofia, Reed Williams, Patrick Matchett and Ryan Lee were all named to the NSCAA Scholar All-West Region team, as announced by the organization today. Sofia and Williams were named to the first team while Matchett and Lee received second-team accolades.

Sofia played in 19 of UCLA’s 20 matches this season while serving as the anchor of the back line. He captained the Bruins to the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003, all while helping the team earn seven shutouts on the season. Additionally, Sofia led all of UCLA’s position players in minutes played with 1,714 and scored one goal in his 19 matches. Off the field, Sofia became UCLA’s first ever men’s soccer player to earn first-team Capital One Academic All-America honors in 2012, repeating the feat in 2013 to become UCLA’s only two-time recipient of the award. He has upheld the highest GPA among all UCLA student-athletes since the spring of 2012 (3.96 GPA in Communication Studies) and earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2013. Finally, Sofia was named the 2013 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Williams, a senior forward from Newport Beach, Calif., played in all 20 matches in 2013, making four starts and scoring one goal. Last season, Williams tied for the team lead in goals with seven and earned NSCAA All-Far West honors. He made the Pac-12 All-Academic team for the third consecutive year this fall, earning second-team honors for the first time. In the classroom, he upheld a 3.52 GPA in Business Economics.

Lee played in 19 matches in 2013, making nine starts and tallying two assists. In his two seasons in Westwood, the Moreland Hills, Ohio native played in 33 matches, scoring one goal and recording four points. Like Sofia and Williams, Lee was a Pac-12 All-Academic selection in 2013 after posting a 3.89 GPA in Business Economics.

Matchett appeared in 13 matches this past fall, making nine starts and notching one assist. Overall, he played in 60 matches in his four-year UCLA career, logging 10 assists while helping UCLA reach the NCAA College Cup in 2011. Matchett has a 3.72 GPA in Political Science and was a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection.

To be named to a Scholar All-America Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his or her career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team.
