UCLA 83, Weber State 60
UCLA head coach Steve Alford
“We had great stretches defensively. We really had to concentrate on that. In the second half, that was the best 20 minutes of defense we have played. We had to really emphasize defense after the Duke game. I am not worried about this team offensively. We have the ability to score. This was a big 40 minutes for us.
“Weber State is a well-coached team, so this was a great opportunity to put together a great 20 minutes in the second half. We [had] 80 minutes of basketball before we start the Pac-12 season. We emphasized to our guys that we have to put together 40 minutes and this was a good 40 minutes.
on sophomore Tony Parker
“He was really active. We have been telling him that he has to be ready to go when he gets in. He did a great job inside creating space.”
on sophomore Jordan Adams
“The challenge for Jordan is defense. I do not worry about his offense, he is a scorer.”
on the team’s first 12 games
“We are 10-2. We have put together good minutes, and we have come out of the gate pretty strong. Right now, our offense is ahead of our defense and if we plan to be a better team, we are going to have to plan to put together more 40-minute games.”
UCLA sophomore Tony Parker
on overcoming the loss to Duke last Thursday
“Coach did a great job talking to us and determining our roles. It was tough. It was a great learning experience for a young team. I really didn’t play that well. I was 0 for 3, but I rebounded OK. I just have to do two of the things, not just one. This game, I wanted to play hard. I wanted to put together a good game for my teammates.
UCLA sophomore Kyle Anderson
on focusing on the game against Weber State
“We have to move on from that game [Duke]. We have moved on as a team. The coaching staff did a great job getting us ready for tonight.
on his and UCLA’s effort to rebound the basketball
“I was really happy with the 10 rebounds tonight. I do not worry about that stuff [triple-doubles]. I just play hard and everything will come to me. We have a few things to work on such as defense and distributing the ball. We just have to play an entire 40 minutes.”
UCLA freshman Bryce Alford
on the Bruins’ urgency on defense
“Defense has been stressed all season. Tonight, I feel like we have made progress. We can guard people, and we did a great job of that tonight.”
on adjustments during his freshman season
“What I have learned so far is being patient. I have to let guys get open and make the easy play.”
Weber State head coach Randy Rahe
"I was really pleased with our effort, but the shots did not go in. UCLA had something to do with that as well. I thought we fought really hard. We played an outstanding team that was coming off a loss with outstanding talent on their court. I thought they really cranked it up a notch on us today.”
“Richaud [Gittens] is getting more confident. He is a true freshman and the more game experience he gets the better he will become. We had a game canceled on us and that really hurt us. We just need to play more games.”
Weber State freshman Richaud Gittens
“UCLA is a very physical team. We need to learn to keep up with their physicality. I am feeling more confident to play at this level.”
