The UCLA men’s volleyball team defeated UBC Okanagan Tuesday afternoon in three sets at Pauley Pavilion in its final exhibition before the 2014 season.
The Bruins won 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 as all players on the roster saw action on the floor.
In the first set, the Heat battled back from a 4-7 deficit to take an 8-7 lead with Chris Wilson at the service line. UCLA senior Robart Page served three points to give the Bruins a 12-9 lead and UBC was forced to call its first timeout. The Bruins continued the momentum with Page, seniors Gonzalo Quiroga and Spencer Rowe recording 13 kills among them.
In the second set, Coach John Speraw inserted freshmen Mitch Stahl and Michael Fisher, and the Bruins rode their hot arms to a quick 10-3 lead before the Heat called its first timeout. Stahl and Fisher continued to score points and the Bruins cruised to another eight-point margin.
The Heat took an early 5-1 lead in Set 3 before the Bruins battled back on blocks by freshman Jackson Bantle and redshirt juniors Kendall Partie and Clayton Paullin. Bantle also added an ace and Stahl a couple of kills and the Heat was forced to burn a timeout, trailing 7-10. Stahl, Fisher and Bantle continued slamming kills and serving aces and the Bruins wrapped up the set to end the match.
Unofficially, Stahl led the Bruins with 11 kills, an ace and two blocks and Fisher added eight kills, two aces and a pair of blocks in two sets played. In the first set, Page and Rowe each added four kills and an ace, and Quiroga spiked five kills. Bantle and Partie led the Bruins with three blocks each.
Nate Speijer led the Heat with six kills, followed by Lars Bornemann with five. Jim Bell,Kristof Schlaginweit and Connor Loewen each added three kills.
Next home match for the Bruins will be Fri., Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. vs. Stanford in Pauley Pavilion. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
