The No.2-ranked men’s volleyball team begins the 2014 season with pool play exhibition matches on Friday, Jan. 3 in the UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational. The Bruins open play in the ten-team event with best two out of three set matches beginning at 10 a.m. in the Thunderdome against Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and then UC San Diego. The afternoon wave of matches for the Bruins begins at 3 p.m. against No. 14-ranked Cal State Northridge and then No. 4-ranked Long Beach State. Other teams in the tournament include No. 5 Stanford, No. 15 Cal Baptist, UOP, Harvard and the host team from eighth-ranked Santa Barbara.
On Saturday, the teams will square off based on pool play results to determine first thru ninth place finishers. The ninth place match will begin at 10 a.m., with subsequent matches scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. (7th place), 3 p.m. (5th place), 5:30 p.m. (3rd place) and the 1st place match will take place no earlier than 8 p.m. All action on Saturday will be held at Robertson Gym and be the best 3 out of 5 set counting matches.
Next weekend, the Bruins will travel to Hawai’I for tournament action on Jan. 9-11 against No. 9 Penn State, No. 10 Ohio State and the 13th-ranked host team. UCLA plays its first home contest of the season on Friday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. versus fifth-ranked Stanford.
