Bruin Players Honored by Soccer America

Goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland and defender Abby Dahlkemper of the NCAA champion UCLA women's soccer team were named to the 2013 Soccer America MVPs first team.

Rowland, a junior from Vacaville, Calif., led the nation in goals against average with a 0.27 mark, the second-lowest GAA in UCLA history. She allowed just seven goals on the year, one of which was on a penalty kick. In the NCAA semifinals, she saved two of four penalty kicks in the shootout to help UCLA advance to the championship match, which they won via a Rowland shutout, 1-0. Rowland's 15 solo shutouts in 2013 established a new school record.

Dahlkemper, a junior from Menlo Park, Calif., won the Honda Award for soccer, becoming the first-ever winner from UCLA. Dahlkemper was the leader of UCLA's defensive unit that ranked No. 1 in the nation in team goals against average (0.30), allowing only eight goals all season. The Bruins had 18 shutouts, including five in six NCAA Tournament games. Dahlkemper was a consensus All-American and is the first defender in 10 years to be selected as a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which will be awarded on Jan. 10. She was also honored as the NSCAA Scholar All-America Player of the Year.

This is the 12th consecutive year a Bruin has been honored as a Soccer America MVP.

Additionally, freshman forward Darian Jenkins (Riverton, Utah) was named to Soccer America's All-Freshman first team. Jenkins was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and a third-team NSCAA All-American after leading the team in scoring with 11 goals and 27 points.
