POSTGAME QUOTES
UCLA 87, Arizona State 72
January 12, 2014

UCLA head coach Steve Alford
opening statement
“I am very pleased with our effort tonight, especially on defense. We did a lot of things better and haven't had a game this good recently. We moved the ball better and that really affected our defensive positioning. We made big defensive strides tonight in a positive direction. ASU is a very dangerous team coming off of a big win at USC. We made it tough on their guard [Jahii] Carson and never let their big fellow [Jordan Bachynski] get into rhythm.”

on UCLA’s effort
“Our effort in practice has been incredible all year. They are a fun team to coach and effort has never been an issue. They had a lot of pressure on them tonight to win, and they executed well on both ends of the floor.”

on freshman guard Zach LaVine’s performance
“Zach LaVine got into a good rhythm tonight. We told him to get more aggressive, and he really got going in the first half. He took good shots, and he is so explosive on offense that he can stretch their entire defense. He is very confident and fun to coach.”

on the Bruins’ improved rebounding
“When we are out of position on defense it affects our rebounding. Tonight, we were in good position and it helped our board game. We are getting rebounds out of everybody.”

UCLA guard Kyle Anderson
“Our guys did really well on defense and that led to good offense. We had to play like our backs were against the wall. We lost the first one [of the weekend series], so we needed to get this one.

“We were unselfish. We were hitting guys for that extra pass. That makes the game flow easier.”

on freshman Zach LaVine
“Zach is very good in practice. He makes some crazy shots. I feel this leads him to playing well in the game.”

on UCLA’s rebounding
“We want to be a tougher team, and we want to hit the glass hard. Overall, I think this will make us a tougher team.”

UCLA guard Zach LaVine
“Sometimes it’s hard to get into the flow. I took about 500 shots a day this week, so I wanted to be more aggressive. Coach wants me to come off the bench. It’s different for me, but you have to accept your role. Being a scorer, getting your first shot is always pivotal.”

on what he’s done to adjust to the college game
“I’ve been working on my core and working on my legs. Scouting has been difficult. Teams know your moves, so it's important to get your teammates involved.”

UCLA guard Norman Powell
“This was a big win. We wanted to make sure we got a split. We didn’t want to lose this game at home.”

on the Bruins’ rebounding effort
“We are becoming a better defensive and offensive team. We are trying to keep teams to one shot. We had them beat 42-29 on the glass. Rebounding is about effort. I felt like we played with great effort these last two games.”

Arizona State head coach Herb Sendek
“We got off to a good start, then Shaq [McKissic] got his second foul and UCLA went on a 14-3 run and we really didn’t recover until the start of the second half, where I think our guys did much better. They gave themselves the chance with the comeback.

“Ball security is always one of our keys, and it certainly was tonight with UCLA being the highest steal team in our conference. We had some inexplicable turnovers, careless mistakes. We lost our sense of what we were doing. You can’t do that at this level and be in a good place.

“Jahii [Carson] didn’t play near his capability tonight, and that certainly has an effect on our team because he is such a key player for us.”

Arizona State guard Jahii Carson
“We have to go from game to game and adjust, but we didn’t do that tonight. They out-hustled us, they out-rebounded us, and we had a lot of turnovers. You can’t win like that. We didn’t have enough energy. Our guys needed a spark, and we couldn’t find it tonight.”
