UCLA head coach Steve Alford
on gaining momentum after last Sunday’s win
“We played really well against Arizona State, and I thought that was a really good win, so we had really good momentum coming in here. We didn’t shoot the ball particularly [well], and you have to give Colorado credit for their defense. I thought their kids really played hard and had really good energy with the injuries they’ve had to deal with, that’s not easy. To get a double-digit [win] and do the job on the backboard, you know this [UCLA] team a month ago could not win a game on the road shooting 39 percent and now we’ve proven we can and I think that’s the biggest statement, that’s what I told the guys. [Against] Missouri we didn’t shoot the ball well in the second half, and against Duke we had a tough shooting night and we weren’t able to win. Tonight was a tough shooting night, and we were able to pull out a win so that’s growth.”

on Colorado making 5-of-17 three-point attempts
“I thought we got to a lot of loose balls, we gained extra possessions, we made our free throws down the stretch and we got a lot of defensive stops. When you have a lead and you can win the last four minutes of the game 11-5, you’re not going to get caught. The only way you lose that is, for instance, against Arizona we gave up 11 points, made a great come back and got a one point lead and we gave up 11 points I think in the last minute and 40 seconds, and 14 in that last four minute game and that’s hard to win. Tonight it was a little bit different, and we get a win because of it.”

on defeating a higher-ranked opponent
“Well it is big, you know, even with their injuries it’s big because they’re undefeated in here and to be able to come on the road with a tough environment, the altitude, the whole deal for our guys to hang in there. Like I said, the biggest thing is we get the road win we needed which gives us some momentum going in to Utah. We also proved to ourselves we can win when we don’t have a great shooting night. We had a lot of guys that struggled shooting the ball tonight, and I thought we showed some toughness by doing some other things.”

on not letting Colorado into the game in the final minutes
“Right, and we talked about poise all week leading into this because I knew this would be a good environment. We knew it was a white out. We knew they’ve had good crowds all year, and I thought we showed a lot of poise once we got that double-figure lead. They would get it to seven or eight on maybe a two-basket run. We got it back up to double figures. I’m proud of the team for being able to do that.”

on being surprised by Colorado’s effort after being injury depleted
“No, because they’ve got a great coaching staff and Tad [Boyle] does a tremendous job. So, I’ve got a lot of respect for what they’ve been able to build here. We knew it. Especially that first game, even their next game, you know guys are trying now to prove themselves and get those minutes now, so we knew we were going to get a tremendous effort, and we got that from them. They worked extremely hard, they got to the free throw line and they did all the things they’ve been doing all year, they just didn’t have that scoring punch. I thought we did a good job on [Xavier] Johnson, it was pretty much [Josh] Scott and [Askia] Booker and getting Booker in foul trouble the second half was huge.”
