Bruins Tame Tigers in Three Sets For Fifth Straight Win
By: UCLA Athletics

Sixth-ranked UCLA won its fifth straight match in a straight set win over Pacific on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion. The victory upped the Bruins record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in MPSF Conference play. Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-16, 25-18.

UCLA used seven kills from Robart Page in set one to help get the match off to a good start. The Bruins jumped out to an 8-2 advantage and were never really threatened. Gonzalo Quiroga added eight digs in the set which UCLA won 25-19 on Page’s seventh kill.

In set two, UCLA broke out to a 7-2 lead. Pacific closed to 10-6, but the Bruins went up 18-12 after kills by Spencer Rowe and Page. The Tigers scored the next three points to make things interesting before a kill and an ace by Quiroga reignited the Bruin attack and made it 20-15. UCLA terminated the set on a block by Trent Kersten for a 25-16 decision.

Set three turned into a battle early after the teams tied the score at two, there and four. Pacific went out in front 7-5 only to see UCLA come back to even the set at 7-all on an ace by Rowe. A Jackson Bantle kill knotted the set up again at 8-all and a Quiroga kill made it 9-all. UCLA then gradually pulled away taking a 15-12 edge on a Page kill. Quiroga added a couple of kills, an ace and a block for a 23-17 lead. Freshman Mitch Stahl closed out the match with a kill for the 25-18 win.

Page led UCLA with 14 kills on the night. Quiroga chipped in with 13 kills, two aces, 11 digs and a couple of blocks while hitting .591. Michael Beals totaled 35 set assists and eight digs. Kersten added six kills and three blocks. Ian Sequeira dug five balls. Rowe had four kills and a couple of blocks while Bantle totaled seven kills and an ace.

UCLA will take a 5-1, 2-0 record into Tuesday night’s MPSF match against UC Santa Barbara. First serve will be at 7:00 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. Tickets will be available at the door. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
