The 2014 UCLA baseball team earned a 6-0 victory in an exhibition contest against the UCLA Alumni Team on Saturday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Junior left-hander Grant Watson started the game for the 2014 Bruins, scattering three hits in four scoreless innings. Sophomore Cody Poteet relieved him in the fifth inning and finished out the game, pitching four scoreless innings as well.
Senior Brian Carroll led the way at the plate for the 2014 Bruins, going 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The 2014 squad jumped out to an early lead, getting two runs in the top of the first. After junior Shane Zeile drew a two-out walk, he stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw. Senior Pat Gallagher then stepped in and laced a double to right-center to plate Zeile. Sophomore Ty Moore was the next batter and he singled through the left side, scoring Gallagher to make it 2-0 in favor of the 2014 team.
The 2014 Bruins added three more in the top of the second, when Carroll smacked a double to the left-center field gap, scoring sophomores Trent Chatterton and Brett Urabe to increase UCLA's lead to 4-0. Carroll eventually came around on a wild pitch just a few pitches later to make it 5-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Christoph Bono made the play of the game, robbing the alumni's Marc Navarro of extra bases with a terrific diving catch in right field. The 2014 team added one more run in the top of the eighth when Bono scored on a ground ball double play, but that would be all the 2014 Bruins would need and they went on to claim a 6-0 victory over the alumni.
Earlier in the day, the baseball program hosted the "Old-Timers" Game, featuring alumni who played baseball at UCLA prior to 1980. In a two and a half-inning contest, the Gold team defeated the Blue team, 5-0.
UCLA will open the 2014 regular season against Portland on Friday, Feb. 14 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time of the season opener is 6 p.m.
