EUGENE, Ore. - Travis Wear scored the game-winning basket with 5.3 seconds to play, leading UCLA past Oregon, 70-68, at Matthew Knight Arena in a Pac-12 game on Thursday evening.

Jordan Adams scored a team-leading 19 points, Norman Powell finished with 17 and Wear added 12 in an exciting back-and-forth contest.

Coming out of an inbounds pass with eight seconds remaining in regulation, Adams was stripped of the basketball before Wear grabbed the loose ball and put up a shot to give the Bruins a 70-68 cushion. The Ducks drove the length of the court in the final 5.3 seconds, but the jump shot by Oregon’s Johnathan Loyd was blocked by UCLA’s Kyle Anderson.

UCLA (17-4, 6-2 Pac-12) registered its fifth win in its last six games, maintaining sole possession of second place in the Pac-12 Conference.

Oregon (14-6, 2-6) had erased a 10-point deficit in the game’s final seven minutes. Trailing 62-52 with 7:18 to play, the host Ducks took a 66-65 lead with 1:36 to play. Anderson missed a free throw for UCLA, and Tony Parker missed a put-back layup before fouling out. Oregon’s Richard Amardi made a pair of free throws with 1:14 remaining to push the Ducks ahead, 68-65.

On the Bruins’ ensuing possession, Adams was fouled while making a layup, and he converted on the free throw attempt to tie the game, 68-68, with 57 seconds left in regulation.

UCLA trailed at halftime by a 36-32 margin before quickly erasing its deficit in the opening minutes of the second half. The Bruins tied the game, 36-36, with 17:52 to play. After Oregon took a 38-36 lead, UCLA used a 7-0 scoring run to secure a 45-38 cushion at the 14:13 mark.

Powell helped key UCLA’s success in the second half, scoring 14 of his 17 points after halftime. Adams finished with 14 of his team-leading 19 points in the second half.

Joseph Young had 25 points for Oregon, which was coming off a 71-44 victory over Washington State that snapped a five-game losing streak, the team’s longest since 2011. The string of losses stopped a 13-game winning streak that had Oregon ranked as high as No. 10 in the rankings.

The Bruins were coming off a 76-64 victory at home over California last Sunday.

UCLA and Oregon entered Thursday night’s contest as the Pac-12 Conference’s top two scoring teams, with Oregon averaging 85.9 and UCLA averaging 84.3.

Loyd played after having surgery on Wednesday to repair a broken nose he sustained in practice on Tuesday. He wore a face mask against the Bruins.
